Stage 1
Ingoldmells to Sheffield
After finally realising he wasn't going to make it as a left winger for Grimsby Town FC, Tom decided to knuckle down at school, graduating from the University of Sheffield with a BA Hons in French Studies.
Stage 2
Sheffield - Paris - St. Étienne
Upon finishing his studies Tom taught English as a foreign language (EFL) at the Université de St. Quentin-en-Yvelines in Versailles and the Université de Jean Monnet in St. Étienne, France.
Stage 3
St. Étienne - Dublin
Tom spent two years as a French speaking customer service agent for Ancestry.com at their international office in Dublin, Ireland.
Stage 4
Dublin to Bilbao
Leaving Ireland for Basque Country saw a return to teaching EFL and learning a new language in Spanish. Tom's first interest in boatbuilding was ignited here through the Albaola museum in Pasaia near Donostia-San Sebastián.
Stage 5
Bilbao - Caerdydd
After working in various language based sales-admin roles Tom finally bit the bullet in 2019 and embarked upon a long awaited career change. He attended Cardiff and Vale College where he obtained a Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery in July 2021. During this time he gained invaluable industry experience at Bay Productions and LM Conservation in Cardiff, and Jarrod's Staircases in Barry.
Stage 6
Caerdydd - Portsmouth
Eager to enhance his skills and pursue the heritage craft of boatbuilding, Tom enrolled at the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) in Portsmouth. On graduation in September 2022 he will have gained the IBTC's internationally renowned certificate as well as a City and Guilds Level 3 in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance.
Stage 7
Where to next?
On completing his training at IBTC Tom will be looking for employment opportunities in the boatbuilding industry. If you think he would make a valuable member of your team or have an interesting woodworking project to discuss - wherever you are in the world - don't hesitate to get in touch.
